This story was written in 2006 after a holiday in Fiji. Having never heard of or seen these strange worm-like fish, I was intrigued to learn more about them from the local people. The fish only rise to the ocean surface two days a year, in October and again in mid November.

Lives were lost, buildings rushed like empty tin cans but some unlikely heroes have emerged from the devastating earthquakes in Christchurch, where trees grown below hills may have saved lives. The NZ School of Forestry at the University of Canterbury is following up this history-making event to measure the impact on tree growth and how trees may help protect communities from future disasters.
