Overseas Investment Office closely follows Canadian investigation into Sino-Forest

01 September, 2011

The Overseas Investment Office in New Zealand is closely following an investigation by the Ontario Securities Commission into the activities of Sino-Forest Corp. The allegations surround falsifying the valuation of forests, which the company has denied. The Chinese corporation has been involved in a series of transations involving a forest in New Zealand, which has seen these assets bunched with tropical forest logging concessions in Suriname for investment purposes.

NZ rich-lister's big punt in shaky Chinese forestry corp

18 August, 2011

Richard Chandler, one of the two richest men in New Zealand, has taken a stake in a Chinese company under siege over allegations surrounding forestry valuations. The Singapore-based tycoon, said to be worth NZ$5.8 billion and only second to Graeme Hart on NBR's rich list, has taken a 15% stake in the troubled Sino-Forest, a Chinese forest plantation company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Sino-Forest has in the past year been involved in a $77 million forestry deal in New Zealand. Questions have been raised about aspects of the company's valuation processes.

New strategies needed to lift forest industry investments

24 May, 2011

The forest industry is one of New Zealand's key sectors yet by any measure is dramatically underperforming when compared with counterparts in many other southern hemisphere countries. Log exports mean foregone revenue from wood processing, which is stagnant. This article analyses a UN FAO study into the constraints on Asia-Pacific forestry investment, references New Zealand and Australia, and looks at the case of Chile, where companies are investing billions of dollars in new manufacturing plant.
